Systems integration: ERP, online store and carriers
Stop typing the same order into three systems. See how an integration hub works and which everyday problems it solves.
7 min readThe hidden cost of systems that do not talk to each other
When your online store, ERP, finance tool and carrier do not communicate, someone has to copy data from one to another. That creates rework, typing errors, outdated stock, late orders and customers left without information. The cost does not appear as a line item, but it is in lost hours and poorly served sales.
What an integration hub is
An integration hub is a layer that connects your systems and coordinates the exchange of information between them. Instead of linking every system to every other one, they all connect to the hub, which receives, translates and delivers data in the right format. This simplifies maintenance and lets you add new systems without rebuilding everything.
Example: from order to delivery without typing anything
The customer buys on the online store. The hub sends the order to the ERP, updates stock, creates the charge in finance, generates the carrier label and returns the tracking code to the customer. If something fails, the system alerts the team with the reason and allows reprocessing.
What to evaluate before integrating
List the systems involved and which of them have an API or another integration method. Define which system is the source of each piece of information (customer, product, stock, price). Plan for failures: what happens if a system goes down? Error logs and reprocessing are part of a good integration.
Where to start
Start with the flow that consumes the most time, usually orders, stock or invoicing. Integrate it, measure the gain and move on to the next one. Now Digital builds custom integration hubs to connect ERPs, online stores, marketplaces, finance tools and carriers.
