Power BI or AI: what is the difference?

Power BI and BI tools: the dashboard you build

Business Intelligence tools such as Power BI organize data into fixed charts and indicators. They are great for tracking numbers that repeat: monthly revenue, sales by region, targets. Someone needs to build the dashboard, define the metrics and keep it updated.

AI for data: the question you have not built yet

AI understands questions in natural language, searches the right sources and answers on the spot, including questions nobody anticipated in the dashboard. It also spots patterns, highlights exceptions and explains why a number changed. It is the difference between looking at a chart and talking to your data.

A simple comparison

BI dashboard: known indicators, fixed visuals, ideal for recurring tracking and meetings. AI: free-form questions, on-demand answers, ideal for investigating, exploring and deciding fast. BI answers what you already knew to ask; AI helps with what you did not know you needed to ask.

When to use each one

Use BI when the number is the same every week and everyone needs to see it the same way. Use AI when the question changes, when data lives in several systems, or when nobody has time to build yet another report. In practice, many companies use both.

The best of both worlds

The most efficient path is usually to keep the essential dashboards and add an AI assistant connected to the same sources. The dashboard shows what matters every day, and the AI answers the rest without a ticket to the technical team.
